Þjófagjá

In former days, there was a farm called Akri standing on the edge to the sea in the area of Snæfellsnæs. Before it was abandoned in the time between year 1906 and 1907, it was also a center for fishermen and their boats.

But since the location was pretty dangerous, there were a high frequency of accidents at Akri.

In 1896 for example, there was a boat that went shipwreck and there was only one man out of the whole crew that could be rescued. This was probably the main reason why the location afterwards lost its popularity among fishermen.

If you go east from where Akri once was located, you will find a crack in between the cliffs called Þjófagjá or "The Thievescrack". In those days, thieves were held captive in the house of the City Council that was located right next to the crack until they had to meet their fate.
